Khao Lak (Thai: เขา หลัก) is a group of villages along the Phetkasem Road (National Highway 4 Thai, which goes from Bangkok to the border town of Sadao), located in the province of Phang Nga, Takua Pa district along the Andaman Sea in southern Thailand. The name of Khao Lak comes from the creation of the National Khao Lak-Lam Ru Park in 1991 which occupies 150 square kilometers surrounding tourist facilities developed on the miles of plages1.
The site is a popular tourist destination because of its beautiful beaches, its national park, its peaceful atmosphere and as a gateway to the Similan Islands and Surin from Thap Lamu Pier.
Khao Lak was almost completely destroyed by the tsunami on December 26, 2004 (This is the site where the film takes place The Impossible recounting the events related to the disaster, released in 2012), but has since been completely rebuilt and has even largely développé1. A memorial located on National Highway 4 and a museum of Tsunami remember what the region has endured.
Khao Lak is approximately 60 kilometers north of the Sarasin Bridge connecting Phuket lÎle the mainland and 74 kilometers from Phuket International Airport. The resort is serviced by bus, taxi or “transfer” hotel from the airport via the National Highway 41.
